History[]

Throughout the 1800s and 1900s, mental hospitals were being built all across the United States; New Hampshire wasn't any different. Often people with mental illness up until the early 1800s were often placed in almshouses, or jail. The country was affected by a movement towards better social welfare, such as caring for its citizens, including the mentally ill. In a report, pleading for funding, quoted "The law of Kindness is the most effectual control for mental or moral alienation, No violence is permitted and no restraints allowed, but such as necessary for the welfare of the patient. The attendants are required to be mild, forbearing, neither to be harsh in language or in manner." The New Hampshire Hospital was founded on the principle of kindness and caring.
